After postgraduate work in Scotland, he became a ship’s surgeon on a ship that traveled between Liverpool, England and Bombay, India, then settled into practice in Stratford, Ontario. He was a great amateur cyclist and held many Canadian records. He wrote “Cycling” in 1894 and “Yukon Memories, Sourdough Tells of Chaos and Change in the Klondike Vale” in 1930, which described his time in the gold fields in 1898-1899.
