Description: - Will combine shipping for multiple purchases Here is another World War II Occupied Philippines 1st Day Cover. Philippine Islands Civilian POW/Internee Post Card, Japanese Stamp canceled June 7, 1943, with Japanese Military Police Censor Stamp. The Japanese Military Police, the Kempeitai, were highly feared and were assigned to liquidate Allied POWs as well as Civilian Internees if the time came where the Philippines and/or the War was lost. It is plausible, given the surname of the business owner, that he was a German National and therefore an ally of the Japanese and not a civilian internee from the Allied Nations or Neutrals. The cover was saved as a souvenir and made it through the War. That is incredible because there was heavy street fighting, building to building, in Manilla similar to the European Theater, including combat on the grounds of the Santo Tomas Internee Camp. It is 81 years old and in good plus condition. I am assuming this was the westerner who created the 1st Day Cover Post Card. He could have been a German National given the surname in which case he was an ally of the Japanese and could carry on business. However, the fact it is in English hints it was produced by an internee.Historical Background: The Japanese when they conquered the Philippines took many Westerners prisoners. Included, amazingly, was Frank Buckles, who was an Army Corporal in the American Expeditionary Force in WWI. Buckles who lived to be 110 and was the last known living American Veteran of WWI when he passed despite the hardships of Japanese interment as a civilian. Manila was known as the Pearl of the Orient, and many countries had businesses operating out of Manila. This included Allied as well as Axis civilians. The Allied Civilians were interned at Santo Tomas. The Axis civilians were allied with the Japanese and had the freedom to go about their business. This gentleman has a German surname and may well have been treated like an ally. For the Western Civilians, the first couple of years of captivity was not too bad. There was a civil and decent Japanese Commandant who allowed many westerners to conduct business, shop at the markets, grow gardens, have their own elected leaders, play baseball, etc. However, once the Allies started taking back the Pacific this commandant was replaced with one who began to turn the screws. This Post Card is dated from when the Western Internees could still go about some business, establish sports teams, etc. without the constant, deliberate brutality that befell military POWs, up to this point in time. The Japanese Military Police Stamp is chilling. They were ruthless in interrogations, and the Kempeitai were slated to liquid Allied Military POWs and Civilian Internees when the fortunes of War turned, or the Philippines lost.
