The vast majority of Germans in World War II were Catholics. Like many funeral services today, a small card (usually baseball card size) were printed with a photo and brief history of the deceased. This custom has existed for several centuries and was very prevalent during the Second World War. This particular card was printed in remembrance of: Josef Lauchner Josef was a Private in an Elite Unit and was most likely a last ditch conscript due to his age of 44. He passed from a car wreck or vehicle accident of some some sort (possibly during a retreat?) on March 14, 1945 in Erfurt, just 10 days shy of his 45th birthday.
