Description: I have just acquired a collection of 30 WW1 French maps which all relate to the very beginning of the war. At this time, it seems that (like the British) the French were not prepared for war in terms of mapping as many of the maps are printed from survey maps dating to around the turn of the century, with some having slightly later revisions. Only as the months progressed and the war became more 'entrenched' did the Allies mapping services kick into gear. This 1912 Revision Map entitled "METZ - S.E" (one of 3 different Metz maps that I have available) is in pretty good condition for its age with some water staining and a tatty left hand edge. Whilst the map states it is a 1912 revision, I believe that it is a 1914 printing of a 1912 Revision as the one of the two other Metz maps from the collection states that it is a 'Edition provisoire - Reproduction rapide de la revision' - suggesting that it would have been in reaction to the outbreak of hostilities in August 1914. All three maps seem to represent individual reprinted quarters of what would have been a larger original map simply entitled "Metz". This one specifies 'S.E.' (sud-est = south east) and the other two have the word 'Metz' split into two different fonts to suggest that one represents the NE and one covers the NW. (Please see the other Metz listings if this is confusing !!) Measures 54cm x 35cm. Will be shipped as per its existing fold lines.
