Description: A very nice example of an original World War One French Infantryman's (Poilu) Aluminium M.1877 Water-bottle 1914-18 'Poliu' in French means 'hairy' and this nickname was given to French soldiers after it became custom for them to grow their hair & beards long at the outbreak of the war as 'an expression of their masculinity'..! Found in Chantilly, just south of Compiegne, it is in a very good, issued condition, with the bottle still retaining its original large cork alongside its original smaller wooden stopper & string tie. Measuring some 10" to the top of the large cork, it also still retains its original thick leather shoulder strap which is also in a nice matching condition. With an area of light surface rusting to the rear and a dent on the base as shown, with a fluted neck this is a very nice variant of the standard French World War One M.1877 pattern water-bottle. A superb surviving personal French military item from The Great War's Western Front.. Thanks for looking..!
