Description: Woodrow Wilson AMOCO Gas Station Campaign Pinback 1972 For 1916 Campaign (2 PHOTOS) CONDITION:Pinback is in good condition and is a 52 year old reproduction distributed by American Oil Company (AMOCO) as a free premium. DESCRIPTION:Pinback measures approximately 15/16'' in diameter. This button is from a Series of 38 Presidential Campaign Pinbacks that were reproduced in 1972 by American Oil Company and given away as free premiums to customers. This pinback represents The Campaign of 1916. The Democratic Convention, wildly cheering "He kept us out of war" renominated President Woodrow Wilson (with Thomas Marshall), who had urged American Neutrality since the World War in Europe erupted in 1914. His opponent was Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes, the bearded "Feather Duster" --- A man of high principle who loathed politics and kept his positions on the issues to himself. Few elections have ever been as close. On election morning Hughes, who had swept the East --- seemed to have won. But he incredibly lost California by a scant 4,000 votes and The Presidency by 12 electoral votes.
