Description: Wonder Woman: Gods and Goddesses: A Novel by John Byrne (1997) Editorial Reviews Book Description Diana Prince, heroine of countless good deeds as Wonder Woman, is accused of bringing evil to Man's world. Her relationship with her closest friend, Helena Sandsmark, is turned into a powerful weapon against them both. The most potent ammunition comes from Helena's own daughter, Cassandra, who idolizes Wonder Woman but spreads unspeakable rumors against her. A zealous televangelist leads the movement to destroy Diana, focusing the burning anger of her many followers on the pagan gods to whom Wonder Woman ascribes her very existence. Amid all this disorder, a gentle priest journeys with Wonder Woman to Olympus to discover the reality of religion. But cataclysmic turmoil is evident even in the realm of the gods and goddesses: Themyscira, Diana's birthplace and the home of the Amazons, lies in ruins from a tumultuous battle. Back in the world of mortals, angry crowds are massed. From Chicago to Metropolis to Gateway City, their demand is the same: Wonder Woman must confess to her dark schemes and never again interfere in the affairs of the human race. Wonder Woman: Gods and Goddesses casts grave doubts on accepted truths and pits Diana Prince against her greatest challenge yet. Review: A Bold New Era Begins…!!! This is a collection of Wonder Woman stories that a few adamant fans have presented as inadequate because it does not comply with their vision of an iconic character that has been around over 60 years. everyone's 'vision' of what wonder Woman should be is going to be different. This one presents us with a Wonder Woman second to none who is beautifully rendered with expressive gestures and even some emotional vulnerability as she falls into tears at one point but has the strength to pick herself up and complete her tasks at hand... Wonder Woman, an amazon born from clay by a mother's love with strength greater than Heracles and a lot of other wonderful gifts has been through many creators who have tried to place their unique stamp on the character. John Byrne's "take" on the Wonder Woman character is engrossing, light and powerful... Powerful not in the sense that you will shed tears per se, but that the art flows from page to page. It is a more, 'cartoony' style evoking an image of a lighter city in America that has fallen on hard times and so it is that Diana goes from her former town of Boston to the aptly named "Gateway City." She will meet a young average looking police officer and a spunky blond child named Cassie among other people...but the main crux of this story is the story of how Diana reacts to betrayal after betrayal placed upon her from previous storylines... for more information on that I heartily recommend "Wonder Woman The Contest and Wonder Woman Challenge of Artemis." Tales by William Messner Loebs that show Diana fighting for her life and her very title of Wonder Woman... All in all, this collection of stories has terrific art in my mind's eye. Please do not let a couple of disgruntled fan reviews prevent you from being allowed to see Byrne's fantastic Wonder Woman... unique in that she is perhaps shown to be the most powerful heroine in comicdom as is her right after surviving in continuous print for 60 years unlike any other female character in her own ongoing series.
