Description: Witty Wings Lockheed P-38L Lightning - Pudgy "V" - Limited Edition (540 pieces) No. WTW-72-020-009, Scale-1:72 Unit - 475th FG, 431st FS, No. 44-24155, Thomas McGuire Jr. Campaign - Pacific Campaign - McGuire went to the South Pacific in March 1943 and was credited with three victories in his first combat mission on Aug. 18, 1943. Soon he had 13 Japanese flags on the nose of his P-38 named "Pudgy" for his wife, who was actually slim and attractive. On his fourth mission, McGuire broke off an attack to cover a damaged P-38. Three Japanese Zeros then hit his P-38 and he was forced to bail from his burning place at 12,000 feet. His parachute sustained damage and did not open until 1000 feet above water. An injured McGuire managed to stay afloat on his life raft until he was rescued by a PT Boat. Over the next six months he scored another 16 victories (challenging Maj. Richard Bong as top ace in U.S. history). In January 1945 McGuire led four P-38s to Mindoro and they were attacked by a Ki-43 Oscar that damaged one of the P-38s. McGuire took action to help his wingman and his plane stalled and crashed to the ground. History revealed that another Ki-84 Frank entered the fray and may have shot McGuire down but the details are still not known for sure. For his "gallant initiative, unselfish concern for the safety of others", McGuire was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously and in 1948, Fort Dix Air Force Base in New Jersey was renamed McGuire Air Force Base in his honor. A restored P-38 in Pudgy V markings stands as a testament to his legacy at the gates of the base. Markings - silver with black and red with name 'Pudgy V' and 131 in red, black and orange with other detail. Comes with various armament, wheels, pilot and other parts for assembly on model. Comes with limited edition collector's card. Model - Lockheed P-38L Lightning Condition - used with minor wear on box which was previously open. Attachments have been moved from left sleeve to compartments near aircraft. Thank you for your interest.
