This 1880 edition was edited by Henry T. Williams and was priced at $2.00 for Full Cloth, Stiff Covers, 364 pages. Adams & Bishop, Publishers of New York state in the preface, “The 350 or 400 pages of this volume, have already required for the Editor and his Assistants, over ten years travel and $20,000 in cost. To its pages special assistance has been given by the most eminent travelers and Government Explorers of the day.” Well over one hundred years later the text, illustrations and engravings (full page and intext), are important reference documents of that time period, although probably viewed as less accurate today. A wonder piece of early Western Americana. On the front free endpaper there is a previous owner stamp that reads, “Barkalow Bros. General News Agents Union Pacific R. R. Cheyenne, W. T.” (Wyoming Territory) stamp. Sidney Denise Barkalow embarked on his first business at sixteen by opening a small book store in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1865 with his brother Derrick Vail Barkalow, he entered into a contract with the Union Pacific Railroad Company for the sale of newspapers, periodicals, candy, books and other articles on the trains. In the early days they enjoyed a liberal patronage in the sale of Indian curios and relics, including polished buffa low hoofs and horns. In 1870 D.V. went to Cheyenne to operate the western division for the company.
