Image of John Hance with a pack mule and a dog on the trail that bears his name in the Grand Canyon. Hance is thought to be the first non-Native to reside in the Big Ditch. "Early in June 1892 Moran, Jackson, and their companions reached the rim of the canyon. There they were met by the legendary guide and raconteur, John Hance.
