Description: JAMES ABBOTT MCNEILL WHISTLER,Title for The French Set, 'Douze Eaux Fortes d'après Nature' (Whistler Sketching). Etching and drypoint on chine collé on cream wove paper, 1858. 113x147 mm; 4 1/2x5 3/4 inches, wide margins. Printed by Delâtre, Paris. Signed in the plate "James Whistler", upper center. Professionally matted and framed in a modern-day Whistler frame. A rich, early impression of this scarce etching, with warm plate tone. There are only approximately 50 or 56 impressions known according to Kennedy and MacDonald respectively. According to Kennedy, early impressions were usually printed on Chine collé, a customary practice of the printer Delâtre at this time. Kennedy 25; Glasgow 22. Whistler here depicts himself outdoors working on a copper plate surrounded by fascinated children. The image responds to a Rhineland tour he made in the summer and fall of 1858 and was used to introduce "Douze eau-fortes d'apres Nature" (Twelve Etchings from Nature), the artist's first published set. The title indicates his realist affinities with lettering added to credit Auguste Delâtre as printer and dedicating the work to Seymour Haden. As Whistler’s brother-in-law, the latter had encouraged his first serious etchings. Even when dressed in a loose traveling suit, the artist cuts a dashing figure, with romantically long hair and a beribboned hat. Inscription: In plate, upper right: "Douze Eaux-Fortes d'après Nature par James Whistler" (words read from right to left) In plate, upper center: "par James Whistler" In plate, upper left: "Imp. Delâtre rue St. Jacques 171 Paris Nov. 1858" In plate lower center: " A / mon viel Ami Seymour Haden."
