Description: Utilizing three leased Boeing 737-300s, the Colorado native and former America West CEO Edward Beauvais launched Western Pacific Airlines during April 1995. The airline was designed to offer low fare flights from the new terminal in the underutilized Colorado Springs, Colorado airport to cities throughout the United States. Throughout its lifetime the airline flew only Boeing 737 aircraft. The company’s no-frills approach meant all-coach seating, no advance seat assignments, no meals, and ticketless reservations. One Western Pacific innovation for aircraft, LogoJets, livery depicting various advertisers (i.e., The Simpsons television show and Sea World), was copied by airlines throughout the world. The airline never earned a profit. A new management team was brought in during 1996. They moved the airline’s hub from Colorado Springs to the Denver International Airport. This move placed the airline in direct competition with United Airlines. In an effort to improve its financial position, on June 29, 1996, Western Pacific Airlines relocated the operations hub 65 miles north to a new point on the Western Pacific route map, the new Denver International Airport. This cover was one of the few pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Western Pacific Airlines flight from the Denver, Colorado Airport Mail Center to Los Angeles, California (where it was backstamped on July 11 - as documented in The American Air Mail Catalogue) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as W7-D59SWf. Western Pacific flew its final flight on February 4, 1998, less than three years after its inaugural flight. It had become the second largest airline serving the Denver International Airport, flying 5.5% of the airport’s passengers.
