It truly is a magnificent example of early American watchmaking in running order. Reviewing the pictures takes me back 150 years thinking about how wonderfully gifted, talented, and precise the American watchmakers were who crafted these watches. I notice that there’s one faint hairline running from between 1 and 2 on the dial to the hub that the hands are attached to. To me, frankly, that’s like wrinkles that come with age for all of us. Look at the hands in picture 15. Consider the handiwork, skill, and experience that it took to make this minute hand. Wow! The movement is housed in a beautiful Silverine case manufactured by The Dueber Watch Case Company of Canton Ohio. A little history here: in 1886, John Dueber, the owner of the Dueber Watch Case Company, purchased a controlling interest in the Hampden Watch Company. In 1888, he relocated the Hampden Watch Company from Springfield, Massachusetts and the Dueber Watch Case Company from Newport, Kentucky to Canton, Ohio. This Waltham Ellery watch is fitted with a Fogg’s Patent Regulator (patent issued Feb 2, 1864) – see inscription in pictures of the movement. The Fogg Regulator adds a jewel to the mechanism bringing the watch from 7j to 8j. The regulation is achieved by turning the screw which is attached to a cam that controls the arc of the vibrating regulator bar. The last 4 pictures show you the movement and the inscriptions on it which are: Wm Ellery, 25090 (Dueber case number), 768456 (serial number), Fogg’s Pattent, Waltham, and the Fogg’s Regulator itself.
