After WALTER WINCHELL JR.'s SUICIDE on Christmas Eve, just one month before this letter was written, Walter Sr effectively retired (this may be after his final published work according to biographies/wikis etc) and he spent most of his final years living as the guest of the Schine Family, predominantly (perhaps completely) at their Ambassador Hotel as portrayed in Winchell biopic (HBO 1998) and several other Hollywood or Society or Politics films, books etc of the period and/or about this era. WINCHELL 's handwriting was as distinctive and unique as his personality as seem in this brilliant letter. Although there is clearly evidence of the former adhesive where it was "pulled" from the Schine memory books. Each book was clearly dated, extensively organized, ....just quite elaborate and beautiful. This letter was lifted directly from Schine Family scrapbooks. The condition has the usual evidence seen in lifting letters from scrapbook Just a very poignant period in Winchell history. In some ways he was clearly defeated thru his infamous Jack Paar feuds etc, and tone had gotten him a bit, but in sone ways this would be a very rewarding time for him. By most accounts he was an in-house raconteur and provided as much to the Schine family by staying at the Ambassador for 2+ years beginning at the time of this letter; as Junius and Hildegarde Schine provided Winchell by picking up the tab (at least that's how it appears to have gone down). Last but not least, note that this letter was made on wonderful graphic letterhead ....provided in his suite at the Ambassador, presumably. The page has no odor and is completely dry/clean despite the remnants of adhesive shown that's in appearance only. Really remarkable piece of Hollywood History and political (perhaps even mental health) history so many ways.
