Pitkin wrote The Psychology of Happiness, Life Begins at 40 and A Short Introduction to the History of Human Stupidity. Autograph quotation signed "May the troubles of mankind/be as short-and-sweet/as our brief tarrying/under this pleasant roof./Walter B. Pitkin/Feb. 10, 1922" by Walter Pitkin and "Here's to Pat Reilly's/dancing school! Long/may it flourish/Mary Gray Pitkin". 1 page, 5x8, binder holes along left edge. American philosopher and author WALTER B. PITKIN (1878-1953), born Walter Boughton Pitkin, was a psychology and philosophy lecturer (1905-1909) a professor of journalism (1912-1943) at Columbia University, but is probably best remembered for publishing a series of self-help books, including The Psychology of Happiness (1929) and Life Begins at 40 (1932). He also wrote A Short Introduction to the History of Human Stupidity (1932), which was translated into 15 languages. MART GRAY PITKIN was his wife. Lightly toned.
