Description: Robert W. Gates 1950s gown - First let me state that the color of this gorgeous gown is nearly impossible to get right in pictures! If you’re not sure you want to take a chance on this shade then please don’t. But it IS a Beautiful lace and taffeta (?) formal ball/prom gown with the color being a combination of copper-y, rust-y, pumpkin-y shade all rolled in one. It needs to be cleaned and the color in the lace will pop, whereas right now it’s a bit dull, even though the lace is gorgeous! Off shoulder fit with a scoop neck in front and a v neck in back Sewn in bustier with wires to give the perfect fit. The gown has a taffeta (?) skirt underneath with 2 layers of tulle and finished with lace and a scalloped hemline. Oddly - at least I don’t get it- between the skirt and layers of tulle is a large bow at the waist. 3/4” sleeves Measurements: Shoulder to shoulder 17” across Under arm to under arm 18” across Waist 26” Dress length 47” - 33” from waist Comes as found and unwashed old as is which seems to be in very good condition Made by Robert W. Gates History of Mr. Gates: taken from SFGate obituaries published Saturday, April 5, 1997: Robert W. Gates, who ran a popular clothing store on the same street in Burlingame for nearly 70 years, has died at the age of 95. Mr. Gates, who died Monday of cancer, was a distinguished-looking man whose store on Burlingame Avenue not only bore his name but reflected his taste with its English decor and constantly burning fireplace. The store opened in 1922, and during the next seven decades its creative and elegant merchandise attracted customers from throughout the Bay Area. Mr. Gates' wife, Virginia, helped to create the successful women's department. Mr. Gates was born and educated in Burlingame -- his father was the city's first postmaster -- and spent all but a couple of years of his career there. Track Page Views With Auctiva's Counter
