Description: Vintage COX KAY Boomerang Apples crate label affixed to a Tasmania Celery Pine Wood box. Really great Midcentury Modern MCM design with a strong, clean graphic. Roy Cox (1903-1976) was a Tasmanian painter, illustrator, and printer, printmaker. He worked for Cox Kay Ltd, a long-standing printing and stationary business located in Hobart, Tasmania. According to the University of Tasmania, he also did book-binding, stationary and box-making. I found this box as is, in a part of California near Palm Springs that is full of wealthy retirees from all over the world. This could have been a souvenir that someone brought back from a trip to Australia and Tasmania. According to what I could find online, this was likely designed in the 1930s or 40s. Roy Cox was an important Australian artist, and was part of the ‘Sunday Painters’ group formed in 1958. Based on the measurements of the box, it seems it was custom made to showcase this label. The label has a small loss at two corners. It has “COX KAY PRINT” at lower right in fine print. On the back it is marked “Tasmanian Made Celery Top Pine” with an outline of Tasmania in green.
