Description: Until recently, college sports were pure amateur athletics, as student-athletes were not paid for their name, image, or likeness. Some of the more talented had aspirations of turning professional, but most played for only a few simple reasons, namely team camaraderie, school pride, and for love of the game. College baseball has been immensely popular in California for decades, and some prominent big leaguers have been products of the Golden State collegiate system, such as Aaron Judge, Randy Johnson, and Tony Gwynn. This Vintage 1991 W.A. GOODMAN UCLA JIM BONDS #47 GAME WORN COLLEGE BASEBALL DUGOUT JACKET is in good condition, with some dark soiling at the middle front left placket, some nicking at the middle right front placket, a few sizable spots of brownish soiling at the lower left front lining, some loose seam stitching at the back right shoulder, some scattered nicking and dark spot soiling throughout, and with some overall age wear evident (ALL pictured). Otherwise, the jacket is in fine shape, with no other damage to the tough blue 100% nylon construction. Most interestingly, it bears an embroidered gold on blue felt "Bruins" patch sewn at the left chest, carries the iconic Bruins "bear in a baseball cap" logo patch sewn at the left shoulder, along with the white trimmed gold number "47" sewn at the right shoulder, and is adorned with "UCLA" sewn in matching white trimmed gold lettering across the upper back. This jacket was worn by Jim Bonds, who played quarterback at UCLA from 1986-1990 (he was behind the future NFL Hall of Fame legend Troy Aikman and another talented quarterback on the depth chart, but don't assume Bonds wasn't talented, for based on the stories that still abound, the kid could sling it), and pitched on the UCLA baseball team in 1991. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the later rounds of the 1991 MLB draft, but decided to pursue a career coaching football instead. He was the head football coach at St. Francis High School in La Canada Flintridge, CA (just north of Pasadena) for 20 years, before succumbing to cancer in October 2020. Jim Bonds was beloved by all who knew him. He was a teammate of current Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts at UCLA in 1991. The jacket is a Size 48, boasts the original "W.A. Goodman & Sons" maker's label at the inside neck, and sports a fully functional "TALON" brass front zipper, slash entry lower front "hand warmer" pockets, blue knit cuffs and waistband, and a warm blue knit lining. A fine example of a very rare, original Vintage 1991 W.A. GOODMAN UCLA JIM BONDS #47 GAME WORN COLLEGE BASEBALL DUGOUT JACKET. We have shown a photo of Dave Roberts during the Stand Up To Cancer segment of Game 3 of the 2017 World Series, with the name written on the placard reading "Jim Bonds".
