Description: This quilt was made with Rag Scraps by my Grandparents in Woonsocket Rhode Island They married in 1915 (see last photo) and were of Ukrainian/Polish origin They were dirt poor - my grandfather worked cleaning toilets and my mother as a child had to search the train tracks every day to find pieces of coal to keep warm so the quilt I inherited is not some fancy pieced quilt with a pretty pattern, but rather ugly - a necessary , functional one of rags because they were too poor to afford a store bought blanket. My grandfather I was told, knew how to sew, so I believe he is the one that made this quilt on a sewing machine. I would guess this quilts age anywhere from 1915 to the 1930s The fabric scraps are rags made from old clothing or old purchased rags from the neighborhood rag man who came by with a horse and cart or maybe the old clothes were given to them by sympathetic neighbors. It would fit a todays twin size bed - about 60" wide by 74" long. The fabric rags are very worn to begin with. In many places they are worn on the quilt. The reverse is tied (feedsack?) or some plain cotton. My grandparents were embarrassed by their quilt of rags and were glad to get rid of it to my mother when she bought them blankets. I am sure not many of these "ugly" rag quilts survived. My mother, however, saved it and cherished it from her childhood. She even patched two torn areas and you can see the patch is lighter than the surrounding ones even though she tried to patch with my grandmothers bag of rag scraps . It is very yellowed stored in a closet not a basement or attic but has no funny smells. There is one stain on the back and a stained area on the front. It is not perfect at all. Hope someone will be interested by this historical background about this rag quilt from an era of extreme hardship that immigrants in America faced in the 1910s, 20s and 30s.
