Stanley describes their No. 40 chisel (1958 catalog) as "Sturdy two-piece construction - blade and shank, forged in one piece, extends almost through the entire handle and meets a shank of steel cap. Steel cap takes hammer blows. Handle is tough, slow burning, black plastic which possesses unusual resistance to breakage. Blades are forged from high quality alloy steel. Bevel edges on blades are correctly proportioned for a good cutting edge." The No. 40 has a longer "Pocket length" blade. Stanley offered these individually and as parts of sets. The Stanley impression in the handle has some of the original orange paint in it, and the blade has a very nice Stanley stamp. It has a nice bevel, but the back will need flattened through the normal sharpening process. For specifications, see the "About This Item > Item Specifics" section of this listing. Minor deficiencies - owner's initials, nicks, etc. GOOD MINUS: 50-65% of original finish remaining. Has seen hard use, but remains serviceable. Scratches, nicks, dents, cracks, chips, improper replacement parts. FAIR: 25-50% of original finish remaining. Heavy wear and rust. Some parts are broken, missing, or improper - serious flaws.
