Description: Vintage Large Soup Ladle Dated around 1920 - 40's - date marks S Manufactured by Pinder Brothers Ltd - Sheffield and marked to the back (P Bros) Large - 34.5cm long, ladle scoop - 9.5cm diameter. Silver plate - EPNS Pinder Brothers - This silversmith and electro-plater was founded in 1877 by John Thomas Griffiths Pinder (1854-1931) and Charles Edward Pinder (1857-1937). They were the sons of George William Pinder, a prosperous silversmith, and Ellen neé Nodder. The company tried various locations (including Rockingham Lane, where it registered a silver mark in 1888), before settling in Court 4 at 48 Garden Street. It was a two-storey workshop, named Sheaf Plate Works, with silversmiths on the ground floor, buffer girls above, and a small warehouse. About ten workers were employed. Church vessels and ornaments were an early speciality, with candelabra and crucifixes being produced for Catholics and communion cups for Nonconformists (John T. Pinder was a United Methodist and temperance worker). Another silver mark at the Garden Street address was registered in 1907. Glassware was factored and more general items of cutlery and holloware were produced. John William Pinder (1882-1955), the son of John Thomas Pinder, eventually joined the firm. Pinder Bros became a private limited company in 1920 (capitalised at £25,000), with John Thomas as chairman, Charles Edward as managing director, and John William as secretary. The telegraph address was ‘Cruets, Sheffield’. Marks included the word ‘PINRO’. On 20 April 1931, the chairman died suddenly at his home in Glenalmond Road. He left £13,106. On 15 December 1937, Charles Pinder, Chippinghouse Road, also died. He left £8,702. John William Pinder, who had been a traveller in the 1920s, took over, alongside his son, Alan John Pinder (1911-1969). In 1939, a new Sheaf Plate Works was established in Arundel Street, at the junction with Matilda Street. The Second World War saw the company become involved in engineering (a sideline that continued for another twenty years). John William Pinder, Dobcroft Road, died in Llandudno on 30 June 1955, aged 72. He left £28,959. The company returned to its silverware roots. But by 2000 David and John Pinder (Alan’s sons) had pushed the company towards pewterware and giftware. Pinder’s had acquired the name of James Lodge and in 1965 registered James Lodge Pewterware Ltd. This signalled a towards shift export markets around the world. Pinder Bros also acquired, inter alia, Julius Isaacs, Travis Wilson, George Lee & Co, and Warriss & Co. In 2000, Pinder’s employed about 18 directly and another 42 as ‘little mesters’ (The Star, 12 January 2000). David Pinder became managing director and chairman (his brother, John, retired in 2010), with David’s son and daughter – Michael and Susan – running production/sales and accounts, respectively. In 2022, the firm was still trading at Sheffield Plate Works. Shipping box 22
