Kokeshi made in Gunma is differentiated from dento kokeshi ("traditional" kokeshi) produced in the Tohoku district in northeastern Honshu. Modern kokeshi is characterized by freedom from the conventional shapes of kokeshi with a round head. The modern kokeshi are often shaped as little girls with plump round body and bobbed hair or other non-traditional forms. #184
