Description: Silver City "Flanders" Poppies Floral 11 1/4" inch Silver Overlay Cake Stand Collecting Silver City pieces for setting a beautiful table for special gatherings? This gorgeous cake or sandwich stand stand has the "Flanders" poppies floral design, referencing the WWI battles that may have had special meaning for families in the 20's through 50's. Delicate dimensional sterling silver tendrils, leaves, buds and flowers frame the top plate, which has a scalloped, raised, silver-lined edge. The stand is footed, and has a divided support in an upside down open heart shape. The silver appears to have the rhodium plating, and is very bright. The reflections on the upside down photos make it look as if the base silvering is worn; it's not. It's just the lighting. In addition, the base, and to a lesser extent the cake plate, have the 365nm black light glow of manganese; manganese glass was phased out due to the need for the element for war use in WWI and was generally not used in glassware produced after 1915. Silver City used premade glass pieces for their silver work so the glass may be older, but it's very likely this piece is a century plus old. These pieces are highly collectible and are becoming increasingly hard to find. Excellent vintage condition; silver is bright and intact, and glass is free from chips or cracks.
