Description: Up for auction is this riddling rack from the cellars of Moet & Chandon in Epernay, France. This rack can hold 120 bottles. M&C '78 is stamped on the front and back. Although old, it is in good condition and very stable. It measures 28 1/4 inches wide, 59 1/4 inches high, and 5 inch depth. Weighs 90 pounds. Great wine rack and display piece. History: To create champagne, the wines went through a process called riddling where all the sediments are gathered in the neck of the bottle. Historically, this was done manually using special riddling racks over the course of 6 -8 weeks. An individual called a riddler would turn these bottles by hand. Only the finest wines were placed in these racks. Today these racks are rarely used. The wineries have gone to mechanized equipment. Therefore it is harder to find racks that were used in these wineries.
