Description: Hello and welcome to The House of chrome. You are looking at a rare and highly collectible Shure 701A crystal model microphone made during the 1930's complete with an equally rare 1930's Shure S32C desk stand. This unique microphone was basically developed by Shure but the actual crystal element sold under license by The Brush Company who had been making excellent crystal mics for several years at that time. This was an affordable "entry level" mic for that time and mics were not cheap back then. Pic # 2 shows this very mic in an old catalog along with a couple other Shure models. This is honestly one of the nicest 701A mics I have ever seen and they don't come around very often. I should note that this mic (like all 701A's) came with it's original crystal element but it was non-working. Those 80 years old crystal element just fail from years of use and are on the fragile side. I took liberties to install an older Shure Controlled reluctance element as a replacement to get this mic working again. More on that later. The 701A never changed it's design and had a conservative masculine look compared to many other mics of that era but in the 1930's this squared design was actually considered to be very modern and sleek. The all metal body with polished chrome accents is quite lite weight despite being 4 1/2 inches tall. The Mic shows extremely lite wear for an item of this age. The front and rear screens are free of any dents and the paint looks great. It still has the inner black silk screens and are free of any dents or tarnish which is a huge bonus. The original Shure badge is still on the rear of the mic and looks very nice. They would often fall off but this one still has it. The polished chrome accents on the mic look fantastic. This mic was stored very well over the years. It should be noted that the mic comes with 8 original screws to hold the screens on the body. The original screws on these 701A are usually missing a few if not all but not this one. The little things that add value. A 16 inch cable runs down through the mic and top of the stand and out the back end on the stands base. It comes with an old female 1/4 inch connector. cable is soft, pliable and free of damage. So the dynamic element is a 1957 model that is in perfect physical and working order but it's a Low Z setting. It's been properly secured inside the housing and has an old school "rockabilly" tone in nature. Very void of bass. If you are looking for a basic broadcasting mic or want that bluesy 1940's sound then this mic will certainly do the trick. You'll see the new element in pics # 14 & 15. The old crystal element seen in pics # 16 & 17 will be sent with the mic just to have the original element. Again, the old element is non-working. Would be a very cool mic to use with the HAM radio as well. You'll just need a mono 1/4 inch cable to insert into the short cable provided. The short cable is in excellent condition. Appx 18 inches in length and has the female 1/4 inch end connector. MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS PART OF THIS SALE... The stand is a Shure S32C model made in Chicago, Illinois and is original to the mic. The S32C has an aluminum base with two steel risers. It was an ultra modern design with a heavier deco vibe that is quite impressive. It has the same black paint scheme that really pops with the 701A and the black paint is original and really good shape considering the small paint chips. It makes an excellent, stable platform and really compliments the mic nicely. It was ultra modern for it's time and was sold for only about 10 years before being discontinued in the mid 1940's. The S32C was a more expensive model sold by Shure and has an adjustable upper tube / riser giving you additional height if needed. The chrome locking clutch mechanism works perfectly and the base has 3 new felt pads. There are no dents or fractures anywhere on the stand. Total height with mic is 11 1/2 inches high (when completely lowered) x 6 inches wide. 16 inches tall when fully raised upright. This will make a beautiful and rare display piece anywhere in the home, studio or office. Museum quality and worth every penny. As with all my vintage microphones...
