This book is Plutarch Selected Lives from the Parallel Lives of The Noble Grecians and Romans. The Dryden Translation with illustration specially prepared for an English edition of 1676. The chapters include Thesus and Romulus Compared; Lycurgus and Numa Compared; Pericles and Fabius Compared; Alcibiades and Coriolanus Compared; Alexender Julius Caesar; and Demosthenes and Cicero Compared. According to Wikipedia "Plutarch (c. AD 46 – after AD 119) was a Greek Middle Platonist philosopher, historian, biographer, essayist, and priest at the Temple of Apollo in Delphi. He is known primarily for his Parallel Lives, a series of biographies of illustrious Greeks and Romans, and Moralia, a collection of essays and speeches. Upon becoming a Roman citizen, he was possibly named Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus" Leather bound with gold gilding on edges. It is 9 1/2" tall, 6" wide and 1 1/2" thick. It has 244 pages. According to the last page "This Franklin Library edition of Rhetoric and On Poetics is set in Sabon, a twentieth-century typeface designed by Jan Tschichold, a elader of the Bauhaus School of design in the 1920s. Quentin Fiore designed the book. The engravings that illustrate the text are taken from the 1759 edition of Cesare Rina's Iconologia, a Baroque work that provided counterpoints t many of Aristotle's teachings. The acid-free paper is 70-pound Franklin Library Vellum White Offset, made to archival standards by the P.H. Glatfelter Paper Company of Spring Gorve, Pennsylvania, for The Franklin Library. The book was printed by R.R. Donnelley & Sons Co., Chicago, Illinois. This book is in excellent vintage condition - no stains, foxing, tears or writing.
