Description: Carl Horner produced this magnificent composite of the 1904 American League. The overall roster reads like a Who's Who of early 20th Century talent and includes Hall of Famers Connie Mack, Rube Waddell, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Jimmy Collins, Cy Young, Elmer Flick, Nap Lajoie, Addie Joss, Clark Griffith, Willie Keeler, Jack Chesbro, Ed Barrow, Sam Crawford, Bobby Wallace, and Jesse Burkett. Tastefully framed to 32.5 x 33.5 in. with the original caption in place which lists each individual pictured. Horner produced composites of this type from 1903-1905 and did an edition each year for both the American and National Leagues. They are among the most striking of all early baseball display pieces and notably rare with few known to have survived. The offered example has restoration to areas throughout with large portions of the left hand side having been skillfully inpainted. The identifier portion has similarly had work done and it appears that its top edge has been rejoined to lower edge of photograph (it is likely that a small amount of the original material is no longer present). Visible area of the piece within current frame is approximately 18.75 x 20 in. With another collector, I will be listing many of the most important vintage baseball photographs in existence. Taken together, this will constitute the most important offering of baseball photographs since the 1996 Christie's Baseball Magazine sale.
