Description: I was given these two exquisitely detailed James Bunnell signed 11" x 15" hand-painted serigraph prints by a friend who was cleaning out her basement. They show two egrets of different species in territorial conflict in a swamp. My friend couldn't remember where she'd gotten them but thought it was probably at a yard sale years ago. I'd guess they date from the 1950's. They'd been protected from moisture and carefully stored so each is in very good condition aside from aging of the paper and evidence of previous framing (see below). James Bunnell was a Disney artist so accomplished that he could paint in a wide variety of styles. These two serigraphs are done in a Chinese style. Each is signed in the lower right corner with Bunnell's trademark stylized signature. The signatures appear original to me (see photos). He evidently liked scenes of conflict in nature since one of his serigraph prints shows two jungle cats, a panther and a leopard, fighting ferociously. In keeping with the style, the egret on the right is a Chinese egret. It has a long, straight orange-yellow bill, a yellow eye, black legs, and white ornamental feathers on its head. It may be a male but it's hard to tell because the sexes are very similar. The egret (or possibly a heron) on the left is a different species, I'm not sure which one. It has a dark eye stripe, thick white crest feathers, and lots of fluffy ornamental feathers on its breast. Like the Chinese egret it has a long, straight orange-yellow bill, a yellow eye, and black legs. The undersides of the tips of the primary feathers on the wings are black. James Bunnell created many serigraph or silkscreen prints and hand-colored prints, often in pairs. This particular pair seems to be rare. One of the last photos shows a detail as seen through a 60X microscope. No ink bleeds through to the back of the paper but it does have some relief in places (see photo), I presume due to the water in the ink. These two serigraph prints were evidently once matted and framed. As a result each painting has lighter borders where the mat protected the surface from the light. The back of the paper is tan with age. These two prints will be shipped flat in a sturdy box.
