Description: Offered for sale is an old woodworking plane. The plane is all wood except for the iron (blade) and chip breaker. The plane measures approximately 16” long x 6-1/2” tall x 2-3/4” wide for a 2” wide blade. The markings on the wood front nose are weak but may be “G.B. Ater”. There was no useful information found on this name related to planes. The blade and chip breaker are both labeled W. Butcher and have the arrow and Maltese Cross logos. Additionally the blade is marked “Warranted Steel” and the chip breaker is marked ”Sheffield”. This plane has a lot good and bad going for it. The blade has a corner chip (see attachment). There are marks, scrapes, and chips from use. The handle has the top edge chipped off. The blade holder and slot has black portions as if burnt or reacted with oil. The irons have rust. The blade and holder is hammered on top. The wood has cracks from age. On the good side, the cracks in the wood are not severe and do not appear to have weakened the plane. The handle is not cracked and is strongly affixed to the plane plus does not wiggle. The irons are collectible W. Butcher Sheffield. The slot form held up well. Nice antique wood plane with W. Butcher Sheffield blade and chip breaker.
