VINTAGE CONN C MELODY SAXOPHONE - 1922 NEW WONDER PRE-CHU BERRY for RESTORATION

"C melody" saxophone. The serial number is 88,xxx, which indicates a c.1922 production date. This is a New Wonder series I model, more commonly known as a "pre-Chu Berry". This horn features a front F button, G# trill key and forked Eb mechanism. It has rolled tone holes and a micro-tuner on the alto style neck. This horn is being sold as is for restoration. It is somewhat playable in its current state (it plays down to low D or so), but it definitely is not in proper playing condition. The immediate reason for this is a broken spring on the low Eb key, which causes it to not stay closed as it should. A leak light inspection reveals most of the pads are still seated well, but they are old and dried out. A full overhaul is recommended for optimum playability. On the plus side, this horn is in great physical condition, so it is an excellent candidate for an overhaul. Read on for details on its condition. This horn is in overall very good physical condition. The body is straight, and the neck has not been pulled down. The micro-tuner is turning freely. There might be a few tiny pings or nicks, but there are no significant dents or dings. The bow guard curvature has not been distorted, and the rim of the bell has never been bent. I don't see any resoldered joints. The key guards have not been bent. The keys are all moving freely, and rebounding properly (except for the low Eb key, which has a broken spring). Several of the rollers are not turning, but a couple are. The screw for tightening the neck is missing. The silver plate finish is tarnished, but essentially fully intact. The pads are quite worn and dried out. This horn comes in its original case. The case isn't in the best condition. There is some separation of one of the joints of the plywood shell. There is also a loose piece of blocking on the interior. One of the latches seems to clasp a little loosely. It has a replacement handle. Aside from that, it has normal wear and tear, and is a bit musty inside. Bottom line, you'll probably want something better for once the horn has been restored.
