Description: School Boys Lieutenant Safety Partrol, S,D, Childs (inv134) This was in my neighbor's garage sale. He says he was a safety guard and remembers he stopped a fellow student from leaving the playground to go home. Replaced pin done many years ago. 1 1/4 inches high. Back reads, S.D. Childs Co., a Chicago company that was a well-known maker of badges, including police badges. The Chicago Motor Club pioneered the concept of School Safety Patrols in 1920. Members of the Safety Patrol were originally all males and called "patrol boys". Each Chicago elementary school had one captain and one lieutenant. They were chosen by the principal and had to be above the 5th grade, a good student, and large for their age. Shubael Davis Childs founded the company in Chicago in 1837 and made many tokens for Chicago merchants.
