Description: Boy Scout "CANOE TRAILS - ST. LOUIS COUNCIL" (1950s) Rare! Rare! Rare!New Old Stock! This is a VINTAGE 'Trails award' patch for the St. Louis Council. + ZERO fraying, stains, fading, paste on the reverse, or any signs of having ever been sewn to a uniform, neckerchief, sash, or red vest + Cut-edge cotton twill patch with gauze backing.+ Diameter: 3" + Striking design of crossed Paddles superimposed on a red 15' Old Town Canoe against blue Water and a white cloud Sky, replicating the basic design of the Canoeing Merit Badge with the crossed Paddles. + Red bordered, with bright crimson, sunflower yellow, shamrock green, lake-blue on white cotton twill round patch. + This vintage, 70-year-old patch was issued before the St. Louis Council became, successively, the St. Louis Area Council, and then the Greater St. Louis Area Council...and before the Boy Scouts of America, effectively ceased to exist, both in name and in spirit, abandoning both the adjective, 'Boy' as well as the moral clarity and founding ethos of the organization founded by Lord Baden Powell.+ NOTE: The sale is for the patch only, not the Canoeing Merit Badge Books. *****Canoe Trails of the St. Louis Council: When I earned this patch with Troop 301 (and Post 301) of Webster Groves, MO, we floated the Meramec, the Black, and the Current Rivers, among others.Council History The Saint Louis Council was formed in 1911 and twelve years later the Webster Groves Council merged with the St. Louis Council. Troop 301, Webster Groves, Missouri, of which I was a member in the late 1950s is reputed to be the oldest Scout troop West of the Mississippi. The name changed to Greater Saint Louis Area Council in 1995 after a merger with two nearby councils. Historically, the council has covered the Saint Louis metropolitan area. However, through multiple mergers with other area councils the GSLAC territory has grown to cover large portions of eastern Missouri and Illinois.
