Description: Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage Boston Acoustics poly-cone 8 inch woofers that were original equipment in my A60 Series II speakers, USA-manufactured in 1988. These 8” mid/bass woofers were also used in the Boston A70 Series II. So, please take a look at my large photos, the measurements, and read the remaining description to decide if these capable Boston woofers should be yours. This pair of Boston Acoustics woofers is in clean, excellent condition. They have structurally flawless poly cones with no cracks or scratches and perfect voice coil dustcaps with no dimples. Also, the gold-anodized steel baskets are in great shape as well. And, most importantly, the aged original factory foam suspension was replaced with modern polyether foam surrounds in the correct smooth angle or “fileted” inner lip profile. Most U.S. speaker companies used foam for their woofer surrounds from the early 1970’s to 1990’s. Foam offers superior excursion to coated linen and rubber surrounds, but invariably rots and falls apart in 12-20 years no matter what climate you live in. These woofers were no exception; the surrounds were dried out and cracked with large pieces missing. As I’m sure you know, proper cone suspension is very important—if you play woofers with faulty surrounds for too long they’ll start to rub the voice coils and ruin them in a short time, so surround replacement is critical. Some of you have replaced speaker surrounds before, so you know that it’s a time-consuming process that takes a great deal of patience and a steady hand. First, I carefully cleaned the cone edges and basket flange to remove the old gummy foam and stubborn factory adhesives, which takes some time to do correctly, and then glued the inner lips to the cones. Next, I glued the surround outers to the basket flanges after centering the cone perfectly to ensure no voice coil rub during play. I allowed overnight drying of the acrylic glue between the steps. Now these woofers are in great shape once again; perhaps even better than new with the modern polyether foam surrounds. Most importantly, they’ve been fully tested after the refoaming and sound excellent with clear, fast midrange and solid low-end for the platform size. In the A60 II, they’re rated down to 55Hz at 60W max input power and cross to the tweeter at 3kHz, so it’s a wide-range, sturdy design. Plus, I tested their DC resistance at a closely-matched 5.0 and 5.1Ω, respectively, consistent with a nominal 6-8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket flanges measure 815/16” diameter, they stand some 3⅝” tall, and the mount holes are spaced 6⅟16” adjacent / 8½” on the diagonal apart, c-t-c. This is a great find if your A60 Series II, or other suitable Boston speaker from the era has 8” woofers that are blown, damaged, or unplayable due to rotted surrounds. And, since these drivers are long-discontinued, they’d make nice spares to have around for future needs. As pictured and described, this pair of Boston Acoustics 8” woofers with painstakingly restored surrounds is offered at a competitive price.
