The stitch test sample made using THIS Greist Blind Stitch Hemmer Attachment is included. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Let's Play!Archive pictures are used to illustrate and demonstrate the features of this type of Greist hemming attachment using my Singer 301a and my Singer 221 sewing machines. I'm going to show you why I am impressed with this vintage hemstitcher. To put it simply, this little quality engineered sewing machine attachment stitches a beautiful blind hem, is your go-to accessory for lace or rik-rak inserts (you will understand what I mean by continuing to read on) and it rocks as an applique attachment!~~~Let's play! First, the Blind Hem.Your Greist Slant Shank Blind Hemmer Attachment was designed to produce a stitched hem that replicates hand sewing. Tiny stitch "bites" in the fabric seem to vanish. ~~~~Here's how.The stitch pattern for your vintage Greist Blind Stitch attachment is 5 straight stitches and 1 stitch out to the left side, then it repeats. Every 6th stitch is a Zag (stitch bite) to the left. To compare: The Singer Blind Hem Attachment stitch pattern is 10 straight stitches and 1 stitch to the left (the Zag/stitch bite). This is an advantage if you are hemming a skirt or pants. Why? Because when the Zag stitches are less frequent they are spaced out more along the hem making the tiny stitches even less visible. And if you are using your attachment to applique, you want more frequent (closer) Zag stitches to secure your applique.~~~This is an illustration of blind hemming. See the little "stand out red" thread hem stitches from the right side of the fabric? Here are the stitches again using a matching thread. Almost invisible! Did you know you can do THIS? As shown above, the stitch pattern for your vintage Greist Blind Stitch Hemmer attachment is 5 straight stitches and 1 stitch out to the left side, then it repeats. Every 6th stitch is a Zag (stitch bite) to the left.Directions below for trim inserts such as Rick Rack are included in my supplemental commentary. Adjust the stitch length on your sewing machine so the 6th stitch bites the far crest/edge of your Rick Rack trim. Stitch the Rick Rack trim to the fabric face up leaving a seam allowance. Then fold the edge of the fabric under. With the bare edge of the Rick Rack face to face with another piece of fabric, sew again to create a rick rack insert. Feeling imaginative?Consider using this technique to embellish your project with pretty lace inserts, contrasting fabrics or ribbons for an adventure in heirloom machine sewing. Imagine cool summer blouse inserts, pretty rick rack inserts near the hems of skirts, short sleeves, baby or toddler clothes, café curtains, table linen, totes, pillows. The list is only limited by your imagination. Let's bring this little unsung hero up to date.Stitchery Magic! If machine applique is something which interests you and you'd like to try... This sporty little vintage attachment has great maneuverability around curves due to the shape of the foot and the Zag (bite) stitches are twice as frequent as other types of blind stitch attachments. More frequent Zag stitches helps secure your applique to the base fabric. The metal edge guide is beautifully designed to assist you with keeping the stitches snug against the fold of your applique work. Your Griest Blind Stitch Hemmer Attachment makes Machine Applique EASY and gives your applique a hand stitched look!Stitching snugly against the fold, the Zag stitch catches the edge of the applique and the straight stitch is buried along the edge. Stitches in "stand out red" thread demonstrate the stitch pattern. Now see what happens when a matching thread is used. Even not so perfect stitching blends in! Understanding and using the Edge Guide makes a significant difference in stitchery accuracy! The Edge Guide is adjustable. By gently pushing the lug left or right, you have perfect control over where the needle penetrates the fabric. Tucking the Edge Guide in close to the fold of the applique "hides" the straight stitches (similar to stitching in the ditch when quilting by machine). The top right blue arrow points to the lug. The lower left blue arrow points to the Edge Guide. This is a delightful little Sewing Machine Applique Attachment! Like my comments? They are included!
