Vintage 1800's JP Coats & Clark Garment Thread Gold Leaf Advertising Sign

Description: Vintage Scarce 1800s JP Coats & Clark Garment Thread Gold leaf advertising sign. There is garment & thread signage, and then there is this piece from the JP Coats company. This stunning piece of garment history is an example of fine advertising from the mid 1800s period while most of us are familiar with the Coats and Clark company, you immediately notice the absence of the clark's name on this piece. The reason being, this wonderful piece of signage came from an earlier time, before the 2 companies merged in 1890. George Clark and his brother Patrick invented the method of twisting cotton together to form thread. We know that George Clark formed the Clark thread company in 1812. In 1830, James and Peter Coats, also formed a thread company named the JP coats company, which was managed in the US by Andrew Coats. The 2 companies, J&P Coats and the Clark company, merged into one company called, Coats and Clark in 1890. This therefore dates this signage somewhere between 1826 and 1890 when they became 1 company. Because of the intricate detail and work involved in this piece, It is also safe to assume this sign was possibly made for one of the parent company offices. This signage is hand painted reverse glass with what appears to be a gold leaf process. Please note that the fact that every character is slightly different. Also note there are no straight lines on the graphics since they were hand traced. One can easily see there is no stencils used on this piece, the sign was painstakingly handpainted by an expert and reversed on the rear of a piece of glass. In addition, the design and font style is a positive indication of the early date this piece was created, when the JP Coats company was very, very young period the images speak for themselves with regard to the item's quality. This sign being over 100 years old does have some flaws (minor paint missing). The glass sign measures 20 1/2" x 17 3/4".
