The 170th Aviation Company (AHC) was activated September 1, 1965 at Fort Benning, Georgia. Arriving to Qui Nhon, South Vietnam on December 22, 1965 it was assigned to the 10th Aviation Battalion. On January 10, 1966 the company was redesignated the 170th Assault Helicopter Company and assigned to the 52nd Aviation Battalion, the famed "Flying Dragons" and was part of Airmobile Light. Deploying to Camp Holloway, Pleiku, in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam, the 170th joined the 119th AHC, 155th AHC and the 219th Aviation Company. The 52nd Combat Aviation Battalion continued to grow as it was joined by sister assault helicopter companies of the 57th AHC, 189th AHC, 361st Aerial Escort and Weapons Company and the 179th ASHC in May 1969. The 170th were assigned the SOG mission, later training crews of the 57th AHC in that mission, as it was rotated between the two units for a period. The 361st Aerial Weapons Company was exclusively equipped with Cobra Helicopters Gunships that were the daily fire support for the 170th.
