Description: WE COMBINE SHIPPING - JUST LET US KNOW YOUR BIDDING PLANS. WE REFUND EXCESS POSTAGE. WE ARE NOT DEALERS. DISPOSING (SLOWLY) OF A VERY LARGE, LIFELONG COLLECTION OF POCKET KNIVES. ONLY POSTING A COUPLE A DAY SO BOOKMARK ME FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. NOTE - no attempt has been made to polish, clean or otherwise make this knife more attractive for photos. An exceptionally rare, uncommonly large Georgian hallmarked sterling silver and Mother of Pearl pocket knife. This was the only one like this I found in 40 years of collecting. No attempt has been made to polish the silver or otherwise clean-up to make it look better for the photos. Clear duty and assay marks, elaborately inset MOP scales. Condition is very good with minor blemishes described below. If any experts out there see issues with the above or the description below, please let me know and I will amend the listing – not a silver aficionado. Measures approximately 4 3/8 inches long overall, closed, 8 1/8 inches open. Sterling silver blade measures approximately 3 9/16 inches long, edge only. Weighs 66 grams or 2 ¼ ounces – unusually heavy for a fruit knife. Obverse blade with clear George III sovereign duty mark and lion assay stamp – these varied depending on the place of manufacture (not indicated on the knife – possibly under the bolsters), but my best guess is that dates from the period 1786 – 1800. No sign of a maker’s mark, Deep luster Mother of Pearl scales, each side with central silver fan motif, two oval rosettes and two round rosettes. Line engraved pinched end silver bolsters and end caps. Liners (possibly integral with bolsters and end caps) of white metal (possibly silver. Steel spring. Friction closing with a noticeable detent at both 90 and 180 degrees. One small blemish/chip to obverse scale. One natural inclusion to the reverse scale. Blade with age staining, a couple of dings to the edge and very slight damage to tip – I’ve repaired quite a few silver repairs over the years (easier to work with than steel!) but made no attempt to bring this back to “original” condition. Please see the detailed photos which form part of the description. Don’t hesitate to contact seller if you have questions.
