This fighting vessel earned eight battle stars in WW II in the Pacific Theater. The 311 foot Balao Class diesel submarine was commissioned 1 May 1943. She was ordered to the South Pacific in the middle of the fighting period. During her nine patrols this brave fighting submarine sank 39 enemy cargo vessels, four navy ships and earned two commendations. She is currently open to the public at Pearl Harbor at the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park. We are proud of these "Greatest Generation" sailors and their sacrifice to win WW II.
