Description: This fantastic card was issued as a Premium by CLARK’S CO. to advertise their CLARK’S O.N.T. SPOOL COTTON, during 1892 (as copyrighted on the front of the card). It is one from a series entitled “ WARSHIPS ” . This series has been designated as series H620 in Burdick’s American Card Catalogue. The front of the card shows a fantastic watercolor image of the featured ship full of color and great detail. The back of the card features advertising for Clark’s Thread and other Clarks products. This card features the U.S. Navy Cruiser BALTIMORE . Here is some information I found on the internet about this warship: The fourth USS Baltimore (C-3) (later CM-1) was a United States Navy cruiser, the fifth protected cruiser to be built by an American yard. Like the previous one, Charleston, the design was commissioned from the British company of W. Armstrong, Mitchell, and Company of Newcastle. Baltimore was an all-around improvement on Charleston, somewhat larger with more guns, thicker armor, and better machinery. She was launched October 1888 and, and served in the North Atlantic Fleet (aka the White Fleet), The Spanish- American War, and World War 1 before being Decommissioned in 1922 The company that produced the stunning lithographic artwork is not identified on the card . The card measures 7 5/8 inches by 5 inches approximately. The card does have some creasing and areas of discoloration I have scanned both the front and back of the card fairly large for you to be able to judge condition for yourself. I think it display nicely. These ad cards are rare. They were given to store owners to display in their stores, and to give away to customers as premiums to help generate sales and product interest. Most were thrown away , and not many survived the past 125 plus years of wear and tear., and two World War Paper drives. This card would make an excellent display piece for anyone interested in AMERICAN NAVAL or NAUTICAL History. Just imagine this beauty nicely matted and framed in your room. I will be trying to list several EARLY TRADE & TYPE CARDS over the next few days (spread across different categories), including one or two that are unrecorded in any guide, that were put given away with Tobacco, Cigarettes, Caramel, Candy, Gum, Chocolate, Bread Coffee Tea Cereal and other products, covering such diverse subjects as Native American Indians , Baseball , Football, Boy Scouts, Ice Hockey, Golf, Presidents of the United States, NCAA and IVY League Colleges and Universities, Dog Breeds and Circus themes and many many more.
