Offered for sale is a copy of "Deepening Involvement, 1945-1965, the US Army Campaigns of the Vietnam War". While many Americans believe that the US's role in Southeast Asia began in the 1960s, it actually commenced right after the end of World War II, when Vietnam fighting for its independence from France. The US backed France, primarily because the Vietnamese rebels were Communist. In 1945, as the battle against Japan was in its final stages, the US supported the movement of Chinese troops into North Korea to repel Japanese forces. Through the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), US observers, trainers, troops and equipment were funneled to these Chinese troops as well as to the French. This aid continued into the 1950s, but when French troops were decisively defeated at Dien Bien Phu in 1954, the French effort to maintain control of its colony essentially ended, and North Vietnam became an independent Communist state. US forces remained in South Vietnam to advise and support the military in that quasi-Democratic nation. When a US destroyer engaged in military action with North Korean forces in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1965, President Lyndon Johnson used this incident to escalate US involvement in Vietnam, and the ensuring years of warfare developed, with the US withdrawing from combat in 1972. This booklet chronicles in detail the years between 1945 when US began to support Vietnamese and French armies to 1965, when the US escalation commenced. It discusses not only the military actions but also the politics behind the decisions made. It is written in very readable form. The book contains color maps of French Indo-China in 1954; the administrative boundaries of South Vietnam in 1963; the US military advisory command districts in Vietnam before 1960; the deployment of US Special Forces troops in 1963; and the Corps Tactical Zone in 1961. There are color and black-and-white photographs from Vietnam and of the involved political leaders. This publication measures appx 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches and contains 66 pages. It is printed on medium-weight semi-glossy paperstock. Best yet, it is unused and in excellent condition. There are no rips, tears, writing, markings, spills or smears, and the binding is secure with all pages firmly in place. Pictures sell!
