The mast pushes completely down and locks in place. A key is inserted into the side which make the top of the mast pop up. You can then extend to any length up to 36 inches. If you lose the key it's not big deal. A small screw driver the same size will work fine. It's a great antenna that stays safe in parking lots and car washes (as long as you remember to push it down). It also makes a good choice if you want to replace a power antenna with something that looks similar but is manual. The most important thing to remember when installing a new antenna is to make sure it is properly grounded to metal on the chassis! If not, it will not work. In an install where it will not be mounted to a grounded chassis it is best to run a separate ground wire direct to the battery.
