[series]. Together with ' "The Admiralties" and "Guam" comprises a three-volume account of the Army operations against a determined enemy up through the Central Pacific.' ¶ Makin is an atoll in the Pacific Ocean, part of the Gilbert Islands which are a part of the Republic of Kiribati. The atoll consists of 16 islands that surround a central lagoon. Makin is perhaps best known for the Makin Raid that occurred during World War II. In August 1942, U.S. Marines landed on the atoll in an attempt to disrupt Japanese fortifications, gather intelligence, and divert Japanese attention from larger landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi. The raid was considered a success, though it came with a high cost in American lives. Today, Makin is home to a small population and the islands' economy is primarily based on subsistence agriculture and fishing. The atoll's history and its location in the beautiful Pacific Ocean make it a point of interest for history enthusiasts and those interested in the Pacific islands." ¶ World War, 1939-1945 -- Amphibious operations.
