Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US ZH-CN X-NONE I was gifted this Tyco HO TALGO train set in 1957 and it has been packed away ever since. It was NEVER run as I did not have a power pack. I was running primarily large Lionel trains at the time(still have them). This set is most likely the only one in existence from 1957 that has never been used so it is EXTREMELY RARE. The set includes the streamlined locomotive, 3 passenger cars that are one unit with a coupler between the first car and the locomotive, uncoupling ramp, portable rerailer and a terminal track section. Also included are 7 telephone poles (not part of the set). The blue box and inside boxes with cellophane covers are in very poor condition. The outside blue box is held together with tape. There are some marks on the locomotive perhaps it was played with a little (see pictures). It was stored in an attic or closet for the last 67 years HISTORY OF THE MANTUA TYCO TALGO HO TRAIN SET CIRCA 1957: In 1956 during the blue box era Tyco came out with its version of the streamlined Talgo train in HO. The #T-9 articulated passenger train was Mantua's imaginary futuristic set and answer to Varney's Aerotrain from this period. It featured a Talgo diesel locomotive and 3 passenger cars. The engine was powered with a conventional Mantua power truck. A Baker style coupler connected it to the articulated car set. The passenger cars were joined together with screws. Each passenger car had interior lighting. Talgo is an abbreviation for 'Tren Articulado Ligero Goicoechea Oriol'. It was a company first founded in Spain in 1942. Talgo trains are best known for their unconventional articulated railway passenger cars that use in-between carriage bogies that Talgo first patented in 1941, similar to the earlier Jacobs bogie. The wheels are mounted in pairs but not joined by an axle and the bogies are shared between coaches rather than underneath individual coaches. This allows a railway car to take a turn at higher speed with less hunting oscillation. As the coaches are not mounted directly onto wheel bogies, the coaches are more easily insulated from track noise. As prototypical futuristic high speed trains rapidly fell out of favor with the public so did these models and as a result they were made for only 3 years. As a result this Tyco set is very very rare. Mantua also made a blue-yellow version but the red silver one is rarer. HO Collector magazine 4th Q 2028 article by Tony Lucio: “With an authentic yet fanciful design that seemingly amalgamates every major mid-century American concept in futuristic passenger prototypes, Mantua-TYCO’s short lived Talgo is an uncommon but worthy member of any “retro-future” display.”
