He first became interested in painting in 1973 and felt totally unprepared because, although he’d been interested in art since his boyhood, he had never taken a single lesson in painting. He began to experiment. He remembers that “it felt good to come home at night and paint for three or four hours. I also had an interest in astronomy so my first paintings were of planets and the solar system. Then I painted a number of seascapes, drawing on my memories of summers on Long Island, and with mounting confidence, I looked for more challenging subjects. I’ve always had a love for the West – the history, the people, and most all of the landscape – so I began painting Westerns in 1975.”
