Description: The Mouth of the Banyu RiverbyTsuchiya Koitsu Japanese Woodblock Print in Color; oban size 24cm x 36.5cm (image); 27cm x 40 cm (including margins) This print overall is in VERY GOOD condition. The digital images reproduced here don't even begin to do this beautiful print justice. The paper exhibits the usual soft mellowing that comes from age; colors are still quite good with only a bit of fading to the yellow pigment in the textiles in the foreground and just a bit of blue shift to the greens in the tree leaves. (I am sure we would see quite a difference if we could step into a time machine and examine a print fresh off the printing blocks.) The back of the print has a Takemura label attached (see photo) but I doubt that any collector would consider that a defect. There is small, minor skinned patch at the back upper margin. This cannot be seen from the front unless you hold the print up to a light and does not impinge upon the image area at all. Also on the back upper margin are a couple of paste shadows from removed hinges. One of these does show through slightly to the front but again does not affect the image. And Finally, there is a tiny corner crease at the bottom right corner, but once again, does not affect the image Overall, a very nice example of a rare print that would meet the desires of almost any serious collector. The Mouth of the Banyu River, a collaborative work between the artist Tsuchiya Koitsu and publisher Takemura Hideo, is considered a rarity among Koitsu's prints, particularly so because it was published in the traditionally sized oban format. Its desirability among contemporary collectors of Koitsu's work is notably high due to its scarcity and the quality of the print. Koitsu’s works with Takemura are characterized by the publisher's meticulous craftsmanship which compliments Koitsu's observant eye for mood and relevant detail. Together they evoke a captivating sense of timelessness and place. Tsuchiya Koitsu, a prominent Shin Hanga woodblock print artist, collaborated with several publishers throughout his career, including Takemura Hideo, also known as Takemura Shokai. This partnership led to the creation of various works that showcased Koitsu's distinctive style, often featuring serene landscapes and traditional Japanese scenes. Takemura Hideo was based in Yokohama and was known for publishing high-quality woodblock prints during the 1930s and 1940s. Koitsu’s prints published by Takemura were typically produced in chuban and postcard sizes, making them accessible and popular to the buyers of their day. The larger oban sized prints they produced together are much rarer and particularly prized by modern Koitsu fans. Every Item I sell is guaranteed to match the description written above.
