Description: Trachycarpus ukhrulensis, or Saramati Palm, discovered (actually rediscovered) in 2006, comes from the botanically diverse and rich area of Northeast India in Manipur (before it got its current species epithet, it was known as Trachycarpus sp. 'Manipur'. With beautifully white undersides to the newer leaves, it is quite a striking palm. Young plants are quite slow-growing. Closely related to the Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), it isn't quite as cold-hardy as its cousin. But it should be more widely grown in the Southeastern USA, and PNW as well as California, TX, and any other areas of zone 8a or warmer. Probably more of a zone 8b palm, but it stays small for many years and easy to protect. This palm requires good drainage, as it grows on rocky slopes.
