Description: Item Description "YOU DON'T HAVE IT IN YOU TO KILL A MAN..." When he hears of his father's death, Tim Chipman (Sterling Hayden) returns to the family logging company to help run it. However he walks back into a losing battle where rival logger Croft Brunner (David Brian) has bought up the railway line and refuses to allow its use - and making matters worse, they also begin to butt heads over sultry saloon singer Lynne Tilton (Vera Ralston). Hayden soon learns the railway affair was a scheme to force his father into using the longest and costliest way of removing his logs, with Brunner then following up with an offer to buy him out. But when Chipman threw the offer back in Brunner's face, he wound up dead in suspicious circumstances. Now with Hayden taking over, Brunner hopes to get his offer accepted but Chipman Junior has no intention of giving the company up, and he has a score to settle with a man he suspects had a hand in his father's death! Here we have yet another offering from Herbert Yates in his bid to make his wife, Vera Ralston, a star. By all accounts, Mr. Yates was losing in this endeavor and poor Ralston had been maligned to such a point that 12 other actors refused to co-star with her. Ultimately, Hayden was paid a special bonus in order to agree. This later led to a lawsuit against Yates from Republic's shareholders, claiming Hayden had been hired at an improvident and excessive salary and that Yates insistence on giving his wife starring roles was sinking the company. However, it is a rousing and underappreciated performance by Ralston here that lifts the picture above what many might expect. From the opening credits alone (a memorable song with some real gems in the lyrics) we are cued in that this is going to be a charming picture filled with a lot of campy fun. The plot quickly moves into the standard patter for this type of film by running a series of very watchable songs, fistfights, romance and melodrama in a cycle that builds to an ending that more or less mixes them all together, but all this is intermixed with great outdoor scenery, some fantastic railroad location footage and genuinely interesting logging train scenes. The tension between Hayden and Brian is enjoyable and also produces some fun fight scenes. The songs are perky and lively, and Hoagy Carmichael on his worst day is better than the top drawer effort of a lot of composers. Very watchable for all the above reasons!
