PRESIDENT THEODORE ROOSEVELT - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 03/19/1895 - HFSID 33282 THEODORE ROOSEVELT Theodore Roosevelt sends a letter asking for help in getting the bill moving that will help to rebuild the public school system in New York. Typed Letter Signed: "Theodore Roosevelt" as member of the U.S. Civil Service Commission, 1p, 7¾x8¼. Washington, D.C., 1895 March 19. To Hon. Hamilton Fish, Speaker of the Assembly, Albany, N.Y. In full: "Your courtesy in the past makes me venture to call your attention to the bill to remodel the public school system of New York. To my mind this is the most important of the bills affecting the municipal government of New York which yet remain, and really I can't see myself exactly where the opposition to it comes in. I earnestly hope you can see your way clear to helping the measure along." THEODORE ROOSEVELT served as U.S. Civil Service Commissioner from May 6, 1895-April 19, 1897, resigning to become Police Commissioner of New York City. HAMILTON FISH served as a N.Y. Assemblyman from 1874-1896, serving as Speaker the last two years. His father and namesake had been Grant's Secretary of State. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Fish as Assistant Treasurer of the United States at New York City, an office he held until 1908. Fish's son and grandson, both named Hamilton Fish, also served as New York Congressmen. Lightly stained not near signature. Signature is bold and clear.
