The American theatrical producer & director Earl Carroll (1893-1948) was also a songwriter and composer. He produced numerous Broadway musicals including his "Earl Carroll's Vanities", "Earl Carroll's Sketchbook" and "Murder at the Vanities". Famous for featuring lightly clad showgirls in his productions, Carroll was known as "the troubadour of the nude". He built the Earl Carroll Theatre in New York and later another on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood. Carroll was prosecuted and served time for perjury following a 1926 scandal. Carroll had thrown a lavish private party in honor of Harry Kendall Thaw at which a young nude woman was featured bathing in a tub full of illegal liquor. The editor of the New York Mirror, Philip Payne, was a guest and published a report of the event which drew the attention of Federal authorities. Prohibition being in force, authorities investigated and, though Carroll denied it happened, other guests confirmed the story. Accused of perjury, Carroll served six months at the Atlanta Penitentiary. Carroll wrote the scores for the Broadway shows "So Long Letty", "Canary Cottage" and "The Love Mill", even writing the libretto for the latter.
