Frequently listed as one of the Fireside Poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings as well as his book Snow-Bound. Whittier was particularly supportive of women writers, including Alice Cary, Phoebe Cary, Sarah Orne Jewett, Lucy Larcom, and Celia Thaxter. He was especially influential on prose writings by Jewett, with whom he shared a belief in the moral quality of literature and an interest in New England folklore. Jewett dedicated one of her books to him and modeled several of her characters after people in Whittier's life. See Wikipedia for more biography. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***The 7 volumes offered here are in good to very good condition considering their age. They all are very clean and tight in text. There is some bumping of corners and some scuffing/fraying as to be expected in books that are over 125 years old. There is slight toning/foxing on initial few pages of a few volumes. The bindings are in remarkably good shape. Volume 1 has some separation of spine at very top - seems repairable (see pix). Volume 6 has stain on fore edge. There is some age and discoloration (minor spotting or foxing) on the fore edge and bottom edges with the gilt on top edge in remarkable condition with minor scratches here and there. There is a slight old book fragrance as expected in books of that vintage. There are no other writings, bookplates, etc. Please see pictures for more detail. This 7 volume collection of Whittier is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection of fine literature or just to have the volumes displayed in a beautiful library with other great works.
